2.2.7 THE END OF THE ARMY OF THE UNITED PROVINCES 1795

Changes to the Batavian republican army

In 1795 (by order of july 8th 1795), the army of the United Provinces was dissolved. Some units, espescially the units connected to the house of Orange (guards etc) were disbanded and most of the other existing units were regrouped in new units. The infantry were now called after the revolutionary French fashion, demi-brigades (or in Dutch: halve brigades). Some units were taken over by the new Batavian Republic but were later disbanded or added to existing demi-brigades.
Disbanded in 1795 were the following units:

Infantry
Rgt Hollandse Gardes
Rgt Zwitserse Gardes
Cavalry
Garde du Corps
Rgt Gardes te Paard
Rgt Garde Dragonders

The infantry at the beginning of the Batavian Republic in 1795 consisted of the following units. Given are the composition of these new units from the infantry elements of the army of the United Provinces. (Remark, the first 6 demi-brigades were by order of July 8th, the 7th only came into existence on September 22nd 1795 (in pay of the Provinces of Holland and Utrecht but from March 1796 in pay of the Batavian Republic). For the organisation of the infantry of the Batavian Army and its further history, see Part 3.
